Welcome to ESAEM
ESAEM, Performing Arts University of Málaga (Spain, Coast of the Sun) has been welcoming students from Universities from the United States for some years, and our educational institution plans to expand our offer of academic programs for international students who want to come to the south of Spain to live an unforgettable educational experience, for a semester or a full academic year to complete their education.
Antonio Banderas Theatre for the young Artists of ESAEM
Antonio Banderas Theatre for the young Artists of ESAEM, was inaugurated by the actor on the 20th of April, in 2017, in recognition of the outstanding prestige of the University, affirming that “you are an example that passion for art and the effort at times against all odds, is the true path for the artist.” This theater is especially memorable for the actor as it is the only theater in the world that bears his name.

Flamenco and Musical Theatre are the main subjects of the curriculum at ESAEM.
ESAEM offers year-long or semester programs to but courses can be tailored to adapt so that your students obtain the number of necessary credits; ESAEM credits are officially certified in Spain and Europe.
We would like to initiate a dialogue with the home campuses for future programs, as educational experts from APUNE (Association of North American University Programs in Spain) affirm that our Performing Arts educational system has similar values and aims to yours.
ESAEM is an associate member of APUNE, the oldest association in Europe (founded 1968), dedicated to providing study abroad programs with a support system to promote academic rigor, orientation and immersion of students, maximum welfare and communication and cultural exchange between Spain and the United States. The Executive Director and Coordinator of APUNE area constantly available to the ESAEM International Department Coordinator daily to assure the best cultural and learning experience for the United States students.
Apart from an unforgettable stay by the sea at ESAEM facilities, located in the sunny heart of Andalucía, study abroad students are offered a wide range of experiences. We would like to invite your students and teachers to come to ESAEM and to the sunny city of Málaga (the birthplace of the actor Antonio Banderas).
ESAEM has welcomed and taught students from the following USA Universities

ESAEM has also hosted students from other countries which include Italy, Norway, Belgium, France, Sweden, Mexico, Argentina, etc...
ESAEM Academic Programs offer the combination of the 3 main disciplines in Performing Arts, Dancing, Singing and Acting, being specialized in Musical Theatre and of course, Flamenco.
Ballet, Jazz, Lyric, Commercial, Hip-hop etc, are included in our schedules.
This integrated approach is one of the reasons why the actor Antonio Banderas fell in love with ESAEM and became one more of us, staying at ESAEM frequently to rehearse his musical theatre play, talk to our students, guide them, share his knowledge, share his illusions, encourage them to work hard, and invite some of his best partners to teach at ESAEM too. One these of inspiring visits can be seen in the following video where Banderas is talking to our students after class:
Every Academic Year, ESAEM celebrates and organizes the famous “Antonio Banderas Awards of Performing Arts ESAEM” as a tribute to the career of an international artist who represents a reference for our students. The recipient receives the award from Antonio´s hands on the ESAEM stage and, on occasion, performs in the amazing show performed by our students and teachers. ESAEM show at “Antonio Banderas Awards” appears every year on the best national and international TV programs, journals and magazines. The singer Rosalía was the 2019 winner of this ever more prestigious award.
ESAEM has an amazing team of teachers, with official qualifications certified by the Ministry of Education. Our teachers are professionals in the industry, coming from Musical Theatre, Cinema, Television, Dance Companies, etc.
Some months ago, the Broadway legend, the director, dancer and choreographer Baayork Lee, worked with our students on special training focused on Broadway Musical Theatre. She also trained Antonio Banderas for his new musical theatre project. They both carried out an audition at ESAEM Theatre, to choose our best students for the new version of A Chorus Line, where Antonio is playing the leading role. At present the play is on tour, and it premiére in New York shortly. Baayork is a close friend of ESAEM, and she will soon return to continue with her courses and workshops.
Another ESAEM close friend, the mythic Broadway Director John Breglio, visited us again last October. Breglio came to ESAEM to chat with our students and attend the auditions for the musical “A Chorus Line” produced, co-directed and led by Antonio Banderas. He was extremely impressed with ESAEM’s high level of education, artistic life style at our residence and ESAEM new facilities.
Broadway producer John Breglio
“It´s the kind of thing that you hope every young student could experience if you are in America or in England or anywhere, you can come to Spain or come to Málaga and see this absolutely wonderful school. You´ll be fulfilled, it would be so wonderful for your own fulfilment and your own education.” – John Breglio
Street Flamenco
We also would like to show you our Flamenco classes for all levels (from basic to professional). ESAEM is also specialized in this great art, having the best Flamenco dancers on stage, teaching in its classrooms. Prominent figures such as Antonio de la Verónica, Estrella Morente, Rafael Amargo, or Benjamín Leiva are ESAEM collaborators and teachers team in the Flamenco Department.
International students arrive at ESAEM with no level of Flamenco, and after some classes they are able to perform a beautiful choreography.
Flamenco is one of the most highly demanded subjects by our international students, but even more so is the course based on a Fusion of Flamenco and Street-style/Hip-hop/Pop called Street-Flamenco created and developed by our marvelous teachers, choreographers, stage directors and dancers Lena Zafra and Borja Rueda.
Lena Zafra and Borja Rueda (The Pair Creatives) directed this videoclip performed by ESAEM students and themselves, paying tribute to Madonna whose son Spanish Lesson was perfect to create a new Street-Flamenco choreography. Have a look at it, because it´s the most demanded style by our students from the USA and Europe. If you´re an international student and you have some base dancing lyric, hip-hop, or commercial, you will be able to dance this Flamenco-Street style very quickly.
Lena and Borja are both working at present on some of the most important TV shows in Spain, such as “The Voice”, “Operación Triunfo”, “Tu Cara Me Suena”. They also are working creating and developing choreographies for the most prominent artists in Europe, and for world reknown galas like MTV Awards.
ESAEM is also a production audiovisual factory, shooting videoclips and movies where our students perform. After studying at ESAEM, all our students easily find a good position in the industry . The leading actor in the musical Billy Elliot, actresses in The Lion King, our dancers in A Chorus Line, TV spots for Sprite, Coke, Nike, dancers working on The Voice, and other T shows and movies are only a few examples.
CNBC International
“I was so impressed with the level that they´ve reached. From what I saw today of the students performing I don´t see why they could be on Broadway.”- Tania Bryer CNBC International
The channel CNBC-International visited ESAEM to shoot a documentary. ESAEM reporters had the chance to interview the CNBC presenter, Tanya Bryer about her impressions of ESAEM.
