What are the Performing Arts?

The performing arts are all those artistic manifestations that have been created to be performed on stage. When we talk about performing arts, we usually refer mainly to theatre and dance. However, there are more exciting disciplines besides these artistic expressions.

Performing Arts Description

The performing arts are a living and ephemeral art, since to be considered as such they must meet three essential elements: performance, stage and audience.

Performing arts can also be considered as a degree that can be studied at a university level. In it fundamental subjects are taught in order to understand and reflect on this artistic phenomenon, but also for students to train themselves as performers or cultural managers.

Characteristics of the Performing Arts

The means of expression of the performing arts are quite varied, and can range from words and action to visual and sound resources. All these media, in harmonious combination, merge to produce an aesthetic experience.

Others of its most relevant characteristics are the following ones:

  • There must be a space in which to develop the plot, and an audience to watch.
  • It almost invariably has actors, stage, audience and objects.
They integrate many people with different backgrounds, who will have responsibilities in the staging of the performance, according to their specialty.
  • Any art form that involves staging can be considered performing art.

The performing arts are appreciated with greater sensory perception than the visual or acoustic arts on their own, as they involve all the spectator’s senses.

What performing arts are there?

Three main disciplines are performed on stage: theatre, dance and music. These in turn are subdivided into many others, such as: opera, musical theatre, puppet shows, circus, recitals, etc.

The most representative ones are described below:

Dance

Dance is the art of expressing, through rhythmic body movements, generally accompanied by music: ideas, concepts, sensations, feelings, stories, etc.

There are different types of dance: we could mention classical, contemporary, folkloric, modern, lyrical, jazz, street style, etc. Each with many genres that vary according to the region and culture. Dance is a universal language in itself that does not require words, but expressiveness in the movements, being one of the oldest manifestations created by the human being.

Theatre

Theatre is nothing more than the art of representing stories, situations and human conflicts through actors, in front of an audience. Its basic elements are text, acting, scenery and direction. You can learn all of them in our dual degree in Dramatic Arts and Performing Arts.

It is one of the most widespread and important performing arts in history, due to its ability to convey a message through the staging of a story, whether real or fictional. Theatre may include other arts such as singing, dancing and literature.

Music

Music is an art itself, but it is also a performing art. It is one of the most complex aesthetic forms that exist due to the fact that it makes possible through sounds made with different instruments to produce symphonies of varying complexity and length.

Music combines and organizes a set of sounds according to the principles of melody, harmony and rhythm. All this to transmit sensations and feelings to the listener, providing an aesthetic experience.

Musical shows

Musical shows are considered to be musical genres that are performed in a staged manner, for example, opera and musical theatre. Today, however, music per se has been resized to encompass a stage show in its own.

Performance

Improvisations or prepared acts that occur in the midst of the public, in a street or public place are considered to be performance.

This singular aspect of the performing arts is not quite well defined, so it could even be considered part of other artistic manifestations such as visual arts or cinema.

Circus

Circus arts include unconventional stagings, focused on the entertainment of the public. They are the heritage of the Roman circus, to which aesthetically pleasing and less aggressive elements have been incorporated, but which maintain a certain character of risk or magic.
